Mata Foundation Bussaco has been initiating a set of management work aimed at recovering the Arboretum, cultural heritage, but also the areas of native forest, which here have unique characteristics and allow the existence of flora, fauna and habitats of high conservation interest, although less known to the general public.
It is in this way that arises the application to the LIFE + program (NAT/P/075), with the BRIGHT Project (Bussaco´s Recovery from Invasions Generating Habitat Threats), aiming to put into practice, test, evaluate and disseminate a set of works on habitat management and nature conservation.
The work in question has never been conducted a national level to the global management of a single territory, and the Bussaco Forest Foundation is a pioneer in these actions. It is expected that the proposed activities will result in the effective eradication, in medium / long term, of the invasive species which are threatening natural values existing in the National Forest.
The relevance of the BRIGHT project emphasis is to become aware that across the board, the biodiversity of the Bussaco National Forest is threatened by invasive species - especially acacias, but also several ornamental species. This situation constitutes a danger to the preservation of Adernal - unique habitat in the world - but also to other habitats and species classified and occur here and which is essential for the preservation of food and shelter.
