C – Conservation Actions

Action C.1 - Actions for Reactivation of plant Nursery and Conservation of Native Species

Reactivation and operation of infrastructures such as greenhouses in order to implement a set of plant production works necessary to achieve the following objectives:

_Conservation and recovery of native forest stands (especially relict habitat formations);

_Progressive replacement of Pinus pinaster pine stands by stands of native formation, with greater conservation value and favoring greater biodiversity;

_Maintenance and reinforcement of populations of rare and endangered autochthonous species;

_Conservation and recovery of riparian vegetation;

In a sustainability perspective, the action includes aspects related to the minimization of nursery operation costs and associated works (originated with the other activities of Fundação Mata Do Buçaco, FP, including not only those of the project but also the management of the Arboretum and Gardens) (D.5 to D.7). In addition, the operation is coordinated with the Awareness-Raising, Involvement and Volunteering Program (actions D.5 to D.7).

These works will focus on the facilities of the old forest nurseries of Mata do Bussaco and on the areas to benefit with native species, involving mainly the 30.6 ha of native forest.

Responsible Beneficiary: Fundação Mata Do Buçaco, F.P.

Action C.2 - Control and Eradication of Invasive Species

This action is aimed at combating and eradicating a number of exotic and invasive species from the Mata do Bussaco, which threaten the conservation of native flora and habitats with high conservation value - and a whole set of services provided by this biodiversity erosion control, food and shelter for protected and threatened fauna, human food, among others.

The main invasive alien species targeted by this project will be not only those which occupy spots of considerable size and for which there are already very positive experiments and control results in other geographic and socio-economic contexts, such as the mimosa Acacia dealbata, A. longifolia, australia A. melanoxylon and Ailanthus althissima, but also include other species for which the experiences of control in the national context are less known and / or non-existent. An example of this is the incense tree Pittosporum undulatum, Robinia pseudoacacia robinia and Tradescantia fluminensis. In a more specific way, a set of ornamental species with delimited and re-occurring occurrence, but whose invasive nature already advises the application of preventive measures, will also be the target of this project in order to safeguard its non-propagation. These species include Cortaderia selloana, Prunus laurocerasus, and Fascicularia bicolor.

For control and eradication of the mentioned species the work of this action includes a set of complementary tasks to be developed in an articulated way, temporally and spatially, with Action C.1, including manual, mechanical and chemical methods.

Responsible Beneficiary: Fundação Mata Do Buçaco, F.P.

D – Awareness Raising and Dissemination Actions

Action D.1 - LIFE + Communication and Dissemination Program / Website

This Action, in articulation with Actions D.2 and D.3, aims to ensure the communication, visibility and dissemination of the project's objectives, development and results. To this end, the creation and regular updating of a project website is planned. From this will be possible to access novelties, reports and digital versions of all the materials of sensitization, dissemination and dissemination produced, as well as the archive of images and videos containing examples of the activities.

Responsible Beneficiary: Fundação Mata Do Buçaco, F.P.

Action D.2 - LIFE + Communication and Dissemination Program / Placards and Outdoors

The work of this Action is intended to ensure greater visibility to the areas involved in project work, as well as the support provided to them by the LIFE + program. In this sense, it is expected to produce and display placards and outdoors with a description of the project work, to identify the intervention areas of the conservation works, the spaces where the main public activities took place, and the set of entrance doors Bussaco National Forest.

The target audience for this Action is the school community, including not only students and teachers, but also households, as they are a key vehicle for transmitting knowledge, values and practices to environmental issues, especially when proximity.

The concrete action aims at the definition of a program of education and environmental awareness, directed to local primary schools, to be coordinated and implemented by the Mealhada City partner, within the scope of Extra Curricular Activities that will be integrated in the theme "Environment and Citizenship". The intention is to ensure a continuous program that enhances the awareness and involvement of the school community in concrete activities and practices of knowledge and support for biodiversity conservation in the Bussaco National Forest, involving 100% of the population of basic education in the Municipality of Mealhada.

Beneficiary Responsible: Mealhada City Hall

Action D.8 - Stock Program of Dissemination and Transfer of Results

The proposed project, involving the demonstration of actions applicable to the control and eradication of invasive alien species in combination with the reinforcement and improvement of native species and habitats, presents a high potential for replication to other geographic and socioeconomic contexts where this type of threat arises. In this context, and also as a result of the support for its implementation by LIFE +, it is the project's objective that the knowledge generated about the conservation actions applied, monitored and evaluated can be transferred and applied / replicated to other contexts, thus contributing to conservation biodiversity in a wider geographic space than the one in which the project focuses.

While the problem addressed is a high priority in other territories under public and private management in the national territory - hence a high potential for applying their results in the Portuguese context - the threats to biodiversity by species are a cross-cutting problem in Europe. In this context, the work of this action aims at a set of tasks of dissemination and transfer of knowledge addressed to different audiences, both in an activity sector perspective and geographic origin.
